Professionalism (2026)
To uphold the public’s trust in the interpreting profession, an interpreter…
Appearance is a critical aspect of being professional as a medical interpreter. Inside of the hospital there are several dress guidelines that you will be expected to follow, be them for safety reasons or simply to appear presentable to patients and providers.

The NCIHC Code of Ethics for Interpreters in Healthcare states that “The Interpreter must at all times act in a professional and ethical manner.” (The National Council on Interpreting in Health Care, 2004). This means “Interpreters present themselves to all parties involved in the healthcare encounter by upholding national and locally applicable standards of practice” (CCHI-Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters, 2017).
Interpreters must abide by the standards for conduct and appearance ordained by the codes of ethics and standards of practice. The dress code is business casual, and it includes the Interpreter’s badge. Perfumed products are not used at any time.
Professionalism requires acknowledging one’s limitations and being transparent about them.

Types of Constraints Interpreters Face:
- Personal (biases, emotional stressors)
- Scheduling
- Linguistic (terminology)
- Cultural
- Memory
- Language variants
- Protocols (in-person, phone, VRI)
Stay calm and never give up! Every challenge is an opportunity.
